Hello Germany

Hello German bakeries :-)

This part of the world is flat. We climbed to 300 feet just before exiting Holland but that was a blip, the soil left over when the rest of this place was set up. The elevation profile on my gps is completely flat with a pyramid stuck in the middle.

Germany isn't provisioned for cycling to the same extent as Holland. The car's the star over here. A lot of roads have a separate bike lane but only on one side and without the same care for driveways and the like. The traffic lights aren't as good - they don't have the bike symbol, just the man.

The border crossing into deutschland was a complete non event. No armed guards, no big signs, no declaring. In fact nothing at all, which surprised me very much. They tell me it's been this way since the eec was born, which shows how much travelling I've done in the past. There wasn't even a shiny board to say welcome - just a drab little thing (hidden - had to ask a local) the size of a normal circular road sign.

Just had schnitzel and salty chips. Schnitzel is lightly battered gammon. Normally it's thin and very large (perhaps Germans like batter more than pig) but these were about the size of a passport and chunkier. Nice. The restaurant clearly don't understand about pudding though, all they've got are two iced things - cold chocolate and cold something else. What I want is cheesecake. Or crumble and custard! Or treacle sponge. Or any of the cakes on display in the bakery earlier on. There's an ice cream place not far from here, needs investigation... (investigated, very yum)

Tonight we're staying in the house of Thomas, someone Calin knows. So no tiny tent tonight! This is the view down the street from his front door:

And this was the second mid day meal:

Four meals a day! Magic.
